Deemed the newest powerhouse of Route 19 by Ashley MacIsaac, Joe MacMaster picked up the fiddle in 2014 and never looked back. Since then he has played countless dances, ceilidhs, concerts, and other events on and around Cape Breton Island. He has also performed across Canada, at the Edmonton Folk Festival, for events in Ontario, and regularly visits Prince Edward Island to perform. He has toured throughout the United States alongside his aunt Natalie MacMaster, and has made his mark across the Atlantic performing in Denmark. With an arsenal of bagpipes, fiddle, and piano, he is in high demand. Joe credits his greatest musical influences as his late granduncle Buddy MacMaster, his aunt Natalie MacMaster, Kenneth MacKenzie, and Mac Morin. His musical sound is distinctly that of his home Cape Breton Island, drawing from the repertoire and style of the rich Gaelic music tradition there. Aside from his music, Joe is a biology major at St. Francis Xavier University, and will complete a Bachelor of Science degree in 2021.

A silence, sadder that the slowest slow air, followed last Wednesday’s news that Buddy MacMaster has died. With his passing, Cape Breton Island had lost a much loved musical voice, a gentle man whose fiddle had brought dancers to their feet in parish and community halls for several decades, and whose talent was as at home at Carnegie Hall as in the Glencoe Station Hall.
